John Paul Stevens, the retired Supreme Court justice who transformed from a Republican lawyer to a champion of the left, has died. He was 99.

John Paul Stevens, who spent 35 years on the United States Supreme Court, died Tuesday at a hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 99.

The cause was complications from a stroke he had suffered the day before, the Supreme Court announced in a statement.
