Smarter Living: Quick tips for running essential errands

Remember: Stay 6 feet away!
The New York Times

You know the deal by now: stay home, wash your hands and disinfect everything.

But there are still some essential errands that require us to venture outdoors. Here are guidelines to keep you safe.

Shopping

A mask, social distancing (6 feet!), obsessive hand-washing and disinfecting surfaces are your best tools.

But also: Touch as few things as possible. Make trips during off-peak hours. Where possible, use touchless payment like Apple Pay, Google Pay and N.F.C chips in your cards.

You probably don’t need to disinfect your jars and plastic containers, but it couldn’t hurt.

Medical care

For an emergency of any kind, call 911.

If you have non-emergency coronavirus symptoms, call your doctor first. Don’t just show up at their office or the E.R.

But other medical needs haven’t just gone away, and it’s O.K. to seek treatment. Consider telemedicine options if possible.

Other questions? You guessed it: Call your doctor.

Prescriptions

The C.D.C. says to keep a few weeks’ worth of prescriptions on hand. But if you must go out for refills, you must go out.

Use the same game plan you would for any other shopping, but consider signing up for a prescription-delivery service like Capsule, which is a digital pharmacy that delivers meds to your door.

And while we’re on the subject …

What about getting deliveries?

Do we have to disinfect every delivery we get?!

Wellllll … maybe? But probably not. As with our groceries, experts say the likelihood of getting infected from a contaminated surface is low, but it is not zero. So if it would give you peace of mind, wipe away.

(And tip generously. We are able to stay home because of these delivery people.)

Exercise

First off: Yes, it is O.K. to step outside for some exercise. You’re not breaking any rules.

If you do, it’s vital to maintain your 6 feet of distance at all times. Nobody wants to be huffed and puffed on by you as you’re running by on the sidewalk.

Hitting the gym? Disinfect anything you touch before and after you use it.

Socializing With Friends

Don’t. Just don’t. Stay home. Please. We’re begging you.

Have a great week!
